THE SOUTH AFRICAN SOCIETY FOR AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION (SASAE)

The first six agricultural extension officers for South Africa were appointed during 1925.

The Society was established on 23 August 1966 at the University of Pretoria by 128 founder members. The original board consisted of five persons coming from the academic, state and private sectors. The objectives of the Society are as follows:

  • To advance and apply the Science of Extension and of rural development as scientific discipline by stimulating thought, study, research, discussion and the publication and exchange of knowledge, both nationally and internationally.
  • To promote the professionalism, status and dignity of the Extension profession amongst the scientific fraternity, the general public and the studying youth.
  • To practice the natural, economic and managerial sciences responsibly and in public interest.
  • To act as representative mouthpiece for the Extension profession in Agriculture.
  • Annual conferences have been held since 1966 on a wide variety of themes.:

Depending on qualification and experience the Society accommodates its members as professional, full or associate. Present membership stands at 340.

It is visualized that the Society will develop into a more encompassing Southern African Society addressing the needs, not only of Agriculturists, but all that have an interest and a role to play in rural development.

The Society has a central administrative Secretariat that addresses day to day household issues. The details are:
